It’s
not hard to imagine how dogs became “Man’s best friend.” They
are loyal, compassionate and make great companions. In fact, humans and animals
have shared a special relationship since the beginning of time. Unfortunately,
mankind isn’t always as faithful as Rover. Puppy mills churn out poorly-bred
dogs for profit, some pet owners do little more than provide food scraps and
a dog house for their animal, and all shelters face the inevitable problem
of pet overpopulation because of irresponsible pet ownership.
“Puppies aren’t for Christmas—they’re for a lifetime.” This is a simple quote printed on a bumper sticker, but it’s actually a profound message that every potential pet owner should understand. The animals we bring into our lives are relying on us for sustenance, shelter and love. It’s a commitment that can at times be difficult and costly and is too often disregarded.
On this episode of All Around Rockford, we talk about what is mankind’s role in being a good steward of animals. Special guests include Jeannine French, vice president of The Humane Society of Winnebago County and Gary Longanecker, Director of Winnebago County Animal Services.
