Eating
Disorders
Would
you know if your child had an eating disorder? While these diseases can affect
anyone, adolescents are at the greatest risk of developing them. About
10 percent of teenagers have an eating disorder, and 1 in 10 is male. Girls
from wealthier families are more likely to starve themselves, women studying
at college are more likely to binge and purge and athletes of both genders
may manipulate food choices to stay competitive. The three main types of eating
disorders include anorexia, bulimia and binge-eating, all of which carry deep
emotional triggers and can be potentially life threatening. Many who struggle
when it comes to eating need professional help. On this episode of All Around
Rockford, we talk with some experts and learn about the warning signs of eating
disorders and curing this disease. Special guests include Deb Burnell, a licensed
clinical social worker, and Annette McLean, a licensed clinical professional
counselor.
